Sum 41 Chuck - A Refreshing Album to Listen To
You know how there are those albums that you can just sit back and listen to every once and a while. Well I have a list, about a mile long for albums like that. There are some of the obvious ones like Led Zeppelin 4 and Dark Side of the Moon and then some not so obvious. One of those is Sum 41's third album, Chuck. The third album is very obviously trying to get away from Sum 41's poseur punk days, and does a good job of it. With songs like We're all to blame, and 88 you could almost classify this as an alternative metal album, but they do stay in their comfort zone for a few songs, such as Pieces and No Reason.
The album is much darker then their previous albums (All Killer no Filler and Does this Look infected) in tone and lyrics. We're All to Blame sounds a lot like System of a Down with the constant changes in between heavy metal versus and slow chorus's. The lyrics have a lot of meaning talking about how the people who can make a difference in the world (aka all of us) just sit on their asses and do nothing about the problems of the world. The solos throughout most of the album are probably Baksh's best (especially on 88).
Chuck has been criticized for the same things as Green Day's American Idiot, for talking a lot of shit about how bad the world is and doing nothing. Well what I have to say to any critic who was a part of that analysis, go and pull your head out of the whole it's in. The inspiration behind most of the songs were driven from the groups trip to Congo
Through and through the album is great and deserved all the Juno's it won in 2005. I'll give it a 7.8 out of ten.

Poseur at it's best
There was a statement written in Rolling Stone that I really agree with with. "Popular music died with Kurt Cobain." I can't remember who said it but I do remember that he was trying to say that any band or artist that got their start after Kurt Cobain died is crap. There was one main exception he mentioned (Canadian groups) but there are always outliers. One of the best albums that fits that group is The Young and the Hopeless from Good Charlotte. Possibly the best album from that "I-wanna-be-punk-but-am-to-preppy-to-really-be-punk" era, TYATH had 14 songs which all had that somewhat generic tone to them, but there is just something about them that makes them original.
The best song from the album is either the Anthem or the Story of my old Man. Both have a great punk-ish guitar tone to them and the lyrics are quality. The guitars tracks are probably that Good Charlotte has ever had. Great solos and fantastic guitar lines. The other great thing about the guitar tracks is also the best thing about the bass tracks, they are relatively simple. They are the perfect songs for up and comming bands to start off with.
Overall the album deserves an 8/10 for giving something more then the res of the era it was a part of. Just to clarify I don't consider Blink 182, Green Day, or Sum 41 as a part of that era.

The Polls Are In
Well the polls are all completed (even with the small number of votes we got). The winners were...
For best Epic Song - Jesus of Suburbia (really wow)
For best Canadian Group - Rush
For best Punk Anthem - God Save the Queen by the Sex Pistols
I hope we will get some more input for the next few polls.
